Spokesperson Zhang Qiyue's Remarks on the Annual Report of the US-China Economic and Security Review Commission

2004-06-18

Q: Recently, the US-China Economic and Security Review Commission submitted an annual report to the US Congress, alleging that several trends of development in the US-China relations are negative to the long-term interests of the US economy and security and proposing the US Government to make adjustments on its policies in many fields and exert pressure on China with economic and technological leverage. What comment do you have on this?

A: We have taken note of the report and the comment of the White House and State Department spokesmen on it.

Charged with Cold War mentality, the report takes a hostile view of China and China-US relations and has severely misled the public. It has also interfered with China's internal affairs on the questions of trade, economy, Taiwan and Hong Kong. The purpose of the report is to drum up for the "China threat theory" and meddle with and undermine the exchanges and cooperation between China and the US in various fields. We are firmly opposed to this.

We urge the US Government to express clear opposition to the report and its so-called proposals, so as to maintain the overall interests of the relations and cooperation between China and the US.
