|President Danilo Medina of the Dominican Republic Meets with Wang Yi|
On September 21, 2018 local time, President Danilo Medina of the Dominican Republic met with State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi at the presidential palace in Santo Domingo.
Danilo Medina asked Wang Yi to convey his warm regards to President Xi Jinping. Danilo Medina stated that the Dominican Republic should have established diplomatic relations with China long ago, because it keeps up with the trend of the times and stands on the right side of history, and this is in full accordance with the interests of the Dominican Republic and its people. The establishment of diplomatic relations with China is a historic decision made by the Dominican Republic independently and is also a universal consensus of all walks of life in the Dominican Republic. It should not be subject to the external interference or influence the relations between the Dominican Republic and other countries. The Dominican Republic respects and upholds the one-China principle, and developing relations with China on this basis is an important direction of the foreign policy of the Dominican Republic. The Dominican Republic admires the tremendous achievements China has made in its development and believes that the establishment of diplomatic relations with China will open up broad prospects for the two sides to expand mutually beneficial and win-win cooperation. The Dominican Republic looks forward to intensifying high-level exchanges, deepening trade and investment cooperation, and expanding people-to-people and cultural exchanges with China, and welcomes more Chinese enterprises to invest and more Chinese tourists to visit.
Wang Yi conveyed President Xi Jinping's warm regards to President Danilo Medina. Wang Yi said that although China and the Dominican Republic are far apart from each other, this does not prevent the two sides from developing friendly relations. In fact, since the 1950s and 1960s, China and the Dominican Republic have always understood and supported each other. The establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries is an irresistible trend and shared aspiration. The severance of so-called "diplomatic relations" between the Dominican Republic and Taiwan is in line with the consensus of the international community and the principles set by the United Nations (UN) resolution, and is completely correct. We appreciate that the government of the Dominican Republic led by President Danilo Medina has opened the door to the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries with firm political will. We are also pleased that this decision has been widely supported by all parties and all walks of life in the Dominican Republic. The Dominican Republic is a country with independent sovereignty and has full rights to determine its own diplomatic policy. That is also the basic norm of international relations established by the UN Charter. We appreciate the government of the Dominican Republic's reiteration that it will firmly adhere to the one-China policy, which is the political foundation of the development of bilateral relations. As long as this foundation is solidified, both sides can build a mansion of mutually beneficial cooperation on this basis. The Chinese side is willing to, together with the Dominican Republic side, take the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries as an opportunity to intensify exchanges at high level and across all levels, and expand practical cooperation in various fields. We are full of confidence in the development of bilateral relations and the prospects for cooperation between the two countries.
