On September 21, 2018 local time, State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi and Foreign Minister Miguel Vargas Maldonado of the Dominican Republic jointly met the press in Santo Domingo.
Wang Yi expressed that China and the Dominican Republic officially established diplomatic relations, opening up a new historic chapter for bilateral relations. The establishment of diplomatic relations between China and the Dominican Republic completely conforms to the international law and principles of international relations, completely conforms to the principles established by the United Nations (UN) General Assembly, as well as completely conforms to the fundamental and long-term interests of the people of the Dominican Republic. The friendly exchanges between China and the Dominican Republic enjoy a long history. As early as the 1960s, the Chinese government and the people actively supported the people of the Dominican Republic in the just cause of safeguarding national sovereignty and national dignity. Wang Yi expressed that Foreign Minister Miguel Vargas Maldonado and I meticulously reviewed the development of bilateral relations in the next stage and reached extensive consensus.
Both sides agreed to always adhere to the one-China policy. This is the fundamental prerequisite for the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and the Dominican Republic and also the political foundation of the smooth development of bilateral relations, which shall by no means be wavered and shall by no means be jeopardized by anyone or any forces.
Both sides agreed to strengthen exchanges at all levels, especially give play to the guiding role of the head of state diplomacy. The Chinese side welcomes President Danilo Medina to pay a state visit to China within this year to jointly draw up the blueprint for the development of bilateral relations.
