|Wang Yi Meets with Foreign Minister Kang Kyung-wha of the Republic of Korea (ROK)|
On September 26, 2018 local time, State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with Foreign Minister Kang Kyung-wha of the Republic of Korea (ROK) on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.
Wang Yi expressed that there have been important changes in the situation of the Korean Peninsula recently. The Chinese side immediately expressed welcome to the Pyongyang meeting between the leaders of the ROK and the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) on the Korean Peninsula as well as the issuance of a joint declaration. The Chinese side supports the improvement of relations between the ROK and the DPRK, supports the dialogue between the DPRK and the United States (US), and appreciates the efforts made by the ROK to improve ROK-DPRK relations, ease the military tension on the Korean Peninsula and promote the process of the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula. We also support the release of proclamation on the termination of war on the Korean Peninsula. The Pyongyang Joint Declaration receives welcome and appreciation from the international community, and the sincerity of the DPRK is also universally recognized by the international community. It is hoped that the ROK and the DPRK will continue making efforts to well implement the consensus reached at the Pyongyang meeting, and accelerate the improvement of ROK-DPRK relations. All relevant parties should draw lessons from history, meet each other halfway in an earnest manner, and speed up promotion of the political settlement process of the Korean Peninsula issue. We stand ready to continue maintaining close communication with the ROK side.
Kang Kyung-wha expressed that there have been great changes in the situation of the Korean Peninsula recently. The DPRK side further expressed the positive will in the issue of the denuclearization. The Pyongyang meeting between the leaders of the ROK and the DPRK provides important impetus for promoting the settlement of the Korean Peninsula issue and maintaining peace on the Korean Peninsula. The ROK side thanks the Chinese side for expressing immediate congratulations on the Pyongyang Joint Declaration. The ROK side supports the US and the DPRK in maintaining direct communication. It is hoped that all parties will continue making joint efforts to accelerate the denuclearization process of the Korean Peninsula. The ROK side pays high attention to the important role the Chinese side has been playing in the Korean Peninsula issue, and hopes to strengthen communication and coordination with the Chinese side in this regard.
