|Yang Jiechi Meets with Secretary of State Michael R. Pompeo of the United States (US)|
On October 8, 2018, Member of the Political Bureau of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC) and Director of the Office of the Foreign Affairs Commission of the CPC Central Committee Yang Jiechi met in Beijing with Secretary of State Michael R. Pompeo of the United States (US).
Yang Jiechi expressed that the current China-US relations are at a critical phase and are facing quite a few challenges. The Chinese side has lodged solemn representations and openly demonstrated its principled positions on the series of negative remarks and actions the US side had made concerning China recently. We urged the US side to immediately correct wrongdoings and stop actions damaging the interests of the Chinese side. The Chinese side will continuously take necessary measures to firmly safeguard its sovereignty, security and development interests.
Yang Jiechi pointed out that China and the US, the two major countries, can only achieve win-win results through cooperation. It is hoped that the US side will make right choices, meet the Chinese side halfway, seriously implement the important consensus the two heads of state have reached in their several meetings, properly manage differences on the basis of mutual respect as well as expand practical cooperation on the basis of mutual benefit and reciprocity, so as to ensure that China-US relations move forward along the right track. Yang Jiechi reiterated the Chinese side's principled positions on issues including China-US economic and trade relations, the Taiwan issue and the South China Sea issue.
Michael R. Pompeo said that the US is committed to realizing win-win cooperation with China. The US side is willing to strengthen communication with the Chinese side to jointly seek for a constructive proposal to tackle challenges the current bilateral relations are faced with. The US side adheres to the one-China policy and hopes to continue to maintain communication and coordination with the Chinese side on international and regional issues.
The two sides also exchanged views on the situation on the Korean Peninsula.
