Wang Yi Meets with Incoming Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard of Mexico


On November 5, 2018, State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi met at request with incoming Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard of Mexico in Shanghai.

Wang Yi asked Marcelo Ebrard to convey President Xi Jinping's warm greetings to President-elect Andrés Manuel López Obrador. Wang Yi noted that President Xi Jinping looks forward to having strategic communication at an early date with President-elect Andrés Manuel López Obrador to achieve the steady and smooth transition of China-Mexico relations as well as open a new chapter for China-Mexico friendship. President-elect Andrés Manuel López Obrador sent you as the representative to attend the first China International Import Expo (CIIE) in China, demonstrating the great importance he has attached to China. The Chinese side appreciates and welcomes it.

Wang Yi noted that China and Mexico are representatives of major developing countries and emerging markets, and share a common pursuit for peace and stability, openness and cooperation, as well as development and progress. The two countries have always understood, trusted and supported each other. China-Mexico relations are blessed with an important development opportunity. Both sides should lead the development of bilateral relations through high-level exchanges, promote the joint building of the Belt and Road Initiative, expand cooperation in such fields as trade, investment, agriculture and energy, and enhance communication and coordination within multilateral frameworks such as the United Nations, the World Trade Organization, and the G20, in a bid to build China-Mexico relations as a model of friendly cooperation for developing countries and emerging markets.

Marcelo Ebrard conveyed President-elect Andrés Manuel López Obrador's sincere greetings to President Xi Jinping. He noted that the development concept of Mexico is highly matched with the spirit of President Xi Jinping's keynote speech at the opening ceremony of the CIIE today. The new government of Mexico will continue to take the development of its relations with China as a diplomatic priority, strengthen Mexico-China comprehensive strategic partnership, learn from China's development experience, deepen cooperation under the framework of the joint building of the Belt and Road Initiative, and jointly advocate free trade, so as to open a new chapter for Mexico-China relations together.
