|Wang Yi Meets with Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations (UN) Amina J. Mohammed|
On November 22, 2018, State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi met at Zhongnanhai with Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations (UN) Amina J. Mohammed.
Wang Yi noted that the UN is the banner of multilateralism and the core of multilateral mechanism. Under the current situation, the international community needs a stronger UN more than ever. The basic principle of multilateralism lies in consultation for international affairs based on rules consented by all during which the legitimate interests and reasonable concerns of all countries should be accommodated. China, as a permanent member of the UN Security Council, is fully aware of its international responsibilities, and will continue to firmly support multilateralism and support the UN in playing a central role in international affairs. Standing as the biggest developing country, China will also continue to steadfastly safeguard the legitimate rights and interests of developing countries and play a constructive role in making the world a fairer place. China stands ready to work together with the UN to continue to intensify cooperation in dealing with global challenges such as climate change. As the Belt and Road Initiative is highly consistent with the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, the Chinese side is willing to enhance cooperation with the UN to jointly promote cooperation under the Belt and Road Initiative.
Amina J. Mohammed expressed that the UN and China enjoy very close cooperation. It is especially true at a time when the current multilateralism is facing challenges. The Chinese side firmly supports multilateralism and the UN's work, and plays a leading role in dealing with global issues including climate change and promoting the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, which is of important significance for the world. The joint building of the Belt and Road Initiative, as a significant proposal, will provide foundation for realizing global peace and sustainable development. The UN looks forward to continuing to coordinate and cooperate closely with the Chinese side.
