Wang Yi: Adhere to the One-China Principle and Build a Mutually Beneficial and Win-win Partnership

On January 4, 2019 local time, State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi and Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation Alpha Barry of Burkina Faso jointly met the press after their talks in Ouagadougou.

Wang Yi said that he was glad to visit Burkina Faso at the beginning of the new year. This is the first visit by a Chinese foreign minister to Burkina Faso, which is of symbolic significance. Last May, President Roch Marc Christian Kabore made a major strategic decision to restore diplomatic relations with China after a hiatus of 24 years. Burkina Faso has returned to the correct position of recognizing the one-China principle. The two countries opened a new chapter in the history of bilateral relations. This is a wise choice in line with the international consensus and the trend of the times. It will surely bring important opportunities and broad prospects for the long-term development of Burkina Faso and the well-being of its people.

Wang Yi expressed that in just over half a year since the resumption of diplomatic relations, China-Burkina Faso relations have made a series of important progress. Last September, President Roch Marc Christian Kabore visited China upon invitation and attended the Beijing Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) for the first time. The two heads of state reached important consensus on promoting the development of bilateral relations. Exchanges at all levels have been rapidly restored and cooperation in various fields has been comprehensively launched. The two sides have formulated a three-year framework agreement on comprehensive cooperation and signed several important cooperation documents. China's agricultural training experts and medical team are already working in Burkina Faso, and a number of major projects, including Bobo-Dioulasso Hospital and the national backbone network, have already been constructed or will soon be under construction. Humanitarian food aid from China will also arrive in the near future to help the people of Burkina Faso cope with the temporary food shortage.

Wang Yi noted that just now, President Roch Marc Christian Kabore and I had in-depth exchanges of views, and Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation Alpha Barry and I held good talks. Both sides are satisfied with the progress of bilateral relations since the resumption of diplomatic relations and also have full confidence in the prospects of future cooperation. We all agreed that the one-China principle is the political foundation of bilateral relations and must be unwaveringly upheld. Mutual trust is an important guarantee for bilateral relations. We should continue to firmly support each other on issues concerning each other's core interests. We agreed to fully implement the important consensus reached by the two heads of state and the outcomes of the FOCAC Beijing Summit, and forge a mutually beneficial and win-win partnership, so as to let bilateral cooperation better benefit the two peoples. We also agreed to strengthen communication and coordination in international affairs, uphold multilateralism and jointly safeguard the overall and long-term interests of developing countries.
